For Sal Salet, innovation isn’t a buzzword – it’s a mindset shaped over two decades of saying “yes” to challenge.
Sal’s journey with PPL began two decades ago as an intern. After completing multiple internships in Harrisburg, he officially joined the company as a substation and relay engineer. What followed was not a linear career path, but a deliberate one – marked by movement across roles, continuous learning and a willingness to take on the toughest assignments.
“Early on, I had a leader tell me that the more challenging the opportunity, the more you grow,” Sal recalls. “I took that to heart and never turned down an assignment.”
That philosophy has defined his leadership – and helped position him at the forefront of PPL’s utility of the future strategy.
Driving the Future Grid
Today, Sal plays a key role in advancing grid modernization – one of the central pillars of PPL’s transformation into a more resilient, technology-enabled utility.
Among the most promising advancements is the expansion of early fault detection technologies powered by artificial intelligence. These systems go beyond identifying outages – they help pinpoint the type and location of failures in real time, enabling faster, more precise responses while reducing unnecessary field work.
“It’s about making better decisions faster,” Sal explains. “If we can identify whether it’s a conductor issue, a transformer failure or vegetation interference before dispatching crews, we save time, improve safety and reduce costs.”
A Culture That Fuels Progress
Sal credits much of this momentum to PPL’s culture – one that encourages experimentation and supports calculated risk-taking.
“You can’t innovate without the space to try, fail and learn,” he says. “Our leaders have created that environment.”
Now in his second vice president role, Sal is committed to paying that forward – empowering his teams with the resources, trust and autonomy to push boundaries and challenge the status quo.
His leadership philosophy is simple: create the conditions where others can succeed.
Looking Ahead
As the energy industry evolves, Sal sees PPL not just keeping pace – but helping lead the way.
“It’s an exciting time to be here,” he says. “We’re not just building a better company – we’re helping move the entire industry forward.”
From grid modernization to affordability and resource adequacy, the work happening today is shaping the future of energy. And for Sal, being part of that journey is both a responsibility and a source of pride.
“We’re making progress every day,” he says. “And the destination we’re heading toward is a great place to be.”
