A Powerful Network
PPL is driven daily by a determination to ensure that each of our customers has the power they count on every day. Fulfilling that commitment takes dedication, hard work and resources. Through 2021, PPL will invest $16 billion in energy infrastructure improvements to deliver power more reliably and efficiently for more than 10 million customers worldwide.
Our regulated utilities in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and the United Kingdom are implementing these system improvements to build a stronger, smarter and more secure electric grid designed to reduce power outages and outage duration throughout our service territories. These projects are developed with our customers’ future needs in mind. The goal is to construct a smarter energy infrastructure that is flexible and dynamic, offering our customers more choice and control of their energy use.
A Vast Energy Grid
PPL provides energy via a vast power grid on more than 36,000 square miles of service territory across two continents. PPL’s family of companies work tirelessly to monitor, repair and upgrade PPL’s power grid daily.
A Stronger Energy Grid
Our reliability investments are working. Due to comprehensive system hardening efforts, such as vegetation management initiatives and the installation of new, more robust poles and lines, our customers, on average, experience fewer outages today than they did five years ago.
Our utilities use the latest surveillance technology to inspect and analyze our power grid each year in order to detect and troubleshoot potential problems before an outage occurs. PPL Electric Utilities in Pennsylvania was one of the first U.S. utility companies to use drones to assist in power line inspections. In Kentucky, Louisville Gas & Electric and Kentucky Utilities launched an award-winning Air Patrol Stand Alone Data Entry app that allows Aerial Patrol Departments to electronically evaluate and record transmission issues from the air.
A Smarter Energy Grid
Through better use of new technology, we are modernizing the power grid to make it smarter and more resilient. Our investments in automated technologies allow us to reduce waste, increase reliability and meet future electric demands for our customers.
Smart grid and distribution system automation give us the capability to monitor the flow of power, detect outages and remotely reroute power in the event of an outage or fault. In 2016, PPL Electric Utilities became one of the first utilities in the U.S. to fully implement automatic power restoration capabilities in its service territory. These efforts are paying off and have helped to reduce outage duration by an average of 30 percent.
New meter technology is giving customers a new level of control over their energy use. The new meters provide personalized monitoring capabilities and information that enables customers to make changes to their energy consumption. In the United Kingdom, one commercial customer saved 15 percent on energy costs just by educating employees about how and when to use lighting.
A Safer, More Secure Energy Grid
Creating a stronger, smarter power grid results in a resilient system that limits the impact of natural and physical events. The investments we are making help secure the flow of power to our customers and defend the bulk electric system – and our customer’s data and privacy – from attack. PPL complies with all mandatory cybersecurity standards, developed through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.
We are committed to the vigilance and investments necessary to provide the safe and reliable service our customers expect and deserve. To that end, we are active partners in industry organizations designed to share best practices and intelligence in grid security.
