We continually seek new ways to invest our time and resources in our communities. It’s how we do business, and it’s our way of keeping our promise to support a brighter future.
Our employees are an extension of our commitment to community action. PPL employees are known for their dedication to the community. Employees serve on the boards of hundreds of organizations throughout our service areas. They also take an active role — jumping in to help clean up children’s centers, to help students with science fair projects, to lead scout troops and to coach youth sports teams. PPL encourages employees to volunteer their time in their local communities. In 2020, employees volunteered more than 33,000 hours.
These efforts are recognized by the company through various initiatives. We support our employees’ work in the community and offer programs where employees can earn company contributions for organizations where they volunteer.

The shrieks from kids racing down the slide, the laughter of grandparents playing with their grandchildren, the crack of a bat connecting with a fastball as the crowd cheers.
Support for Education
At PPL, we believe that education is vital for vibrant communities. Our company and employees are proud to support a number of initiatives by donating time and funds. Our employee volunteers devote countless hours to tutoring, mentoring and coaching the future leaders in our communities.
Cover to Cover
In 2016, PPL launched a new initiative aimed at erasing the summer learning gap, which is one key factor in improving education for all students. The company partnered with the United Way and other community organizations to develop Cover to Cover, a summer reading program.
The PPL Foundation and PPL employees have donated more than 120,000 new and gently used books to over 26,000 students in schools throughout its Pennsylvania service area. The program also provides funding for libraries and other summer reading programs in central and eastern Pennsylvania. Cover to Cover is one of many examples of how PPL partners with community organizations to help improve education.
Investing in Education
In Pennsylvania, PPL participates in the Educational Improvement Tax Credit program, which allows companies to invest in projects that improve education and enhance access to high-quality Pre-K programs. Organizations must be pre-qualified by the state to participate. Applications will be accepted June through July.
Education is one of the main priorities for the PPL Foundation, which provides grants to nonprofit organizations focused on early childhood education and STEM programs to enable as many children as possible to have access to high-quality education.
PPL’s Empowering Educators grant program provides grants to teachers working to spark an interest in STEM subjects. In 2021, PPL awarded $50,000 in Empowering Educators grants. Since the grant program’s inception in 2003, PPL, and now The PPL Foundation, have awarded more than $300,000 to 265 teachers.
Partners in Education
The company recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of its longstanding Partners in Education program, which encourages employees to volunteer in community schools. Our employees work side-by-side with, and under the guidance of, teachers to make sure their time is used in the most effective ways.
At PPL’s corporate headquarters in Allentown, employee volunteers partner with teachers at local elementary schools to provide tutoring, student mentoring and other classroom assistance.
Lighting our Community
The PPL Tower lights have served as an anchor in Allentown’s skyline since the 1920s. Check out the schedule of the tower lights and what the colors represent.
