Volunteer Spotlight: One employee finds that giving a little bit back returns great rewards

Rebecca BettyWhen her husband suffered a heart attack in his thirties, Rebecca Betty, customer service team manager at Western Power Distribution, says the British Heart Foundation was there. As a result of the experience, she decided to volunteer with the Cardiff branch of the foundation.

“I always thought that I didn’t have the time to commit to a charity as I worked shifts in the Contact Centre,” Betty said. “However, you don’t need to commit on a regular basis. You can help out whenever you can. It’s all about giving a little bit back.”

Betty meets her fellow volunteers monthly to plan fundraising events. Though the foundation is national, Betty explained the money raised stays in the local area — funding research and a heart specialist nurse at a local hospital, she said.

The group has arranged fundraising dinners, Christmas markets and collections at football/rugby games. But Betty’s favorite event is the annual Santa Jog, which WPD sponsors. Betty said the jog is a race around Cardiff Castle in Wales, where participants dress as Father Christmas and chase the ‘Christmas Pudding’ around a 5K course. “It’s all great fun and I’ve met some truly inspiring people over the years.”

She’s heard amazing stories of people who had heart problems, but thanks to research funded by the foundation, have been able to recover and live life to the fullest again.

“The support I get from WPD has been brilliant,” Betty said. Fellow employees turn out for events, plus the company’s fund-matching initiative helps the money raised from a cake sale or raffle go even further.

“There is such a sense of satisfaction knowing that what we’re doing is directly helping a worthwhile cause in our local area,” Betty said.
