Since 1999, PPL Maine has owned and operated eight hydroelectric facilities along the Penobscot and Union rivers in Maine.

Hydroelectric power has some big environmental advantages. It's clean. There are no air emissions. And it's a renewable source of energy. Our hydro operations meet the Maine Legislature's criteria for environmentally friendly power as a renewable generator under the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard.

The hydro sites create wonderful opportunities for outdoor recreation. Boating, fishing and nature study are just some of the activities available at PPL Maine sites. At PPL, we've always been a part of the communities where we do business. PPL Maine offers accredited workshops to schoolteachers on energy and environmental awareness. It also funded a river exhibit that educates youngsters about hydropower.
