PPL Global owns electric delivery companies in the United Kingdom that collectively are known as Western Power Distribution.
WPD South West delivers electricity to 1.5 million customers in a 5,560-square-mile area from Bristol to Bath, England. About 29,800 miles of wire make up the distribution network. PPL Global made its initial investment in WPD South West in 1996, when the utility was known as SWEB.
WPD South Wales serves an area of Wales opposite the Bristol Channel from WPD South West’s territory. WPD South Wales delivers electricity to 1.1 million customers in an area covering 4,550 square miles. About 20,400 miles of wire make up the distribution network. Western Power Distribution acquired the South Wales operation in 2000.
WPD West Midlands delivers electricity to 2.5 million customers in a 5,174-square-mile area in central England, including its second largest city, Birmingham. About 39,300 miles of wire make up the distribution network.
WPD East Midlands is contiguous to WPD West Midlands in east-central England, including the city of Nottingham. It delivers electricity to 2.7 million customers over 6,293-square-miles. About 44,500 miles of wire make up the distribution network.
PPL Corporation, through Western Power Distribution, acquired the West and East Midlands operations in 2011. This acquisition makes Western Power Distribution the largest network of electric delivery companies in the United Kingdom in terms of regulated asset value.
WPD’s operations in southwest England and south Wales have held the U.K. government’s customer excellence awards since 1992. No other electricity distribution company in the U.K. has ever earned the honor.
