  • 100 percent ownership

PPL Shoreham and PPL Edgewood are part of the Long Island Power Authority’s "Powering Long Island" program, designed to site small generators at key locations to meet Long Island’s escalating demand for electricity.

PPL built the simple-cycle generating facilities on property owned by LIPA in Shoreham, N.Y., and at the Pilgrim State Hospital in the Edgewood section of Brentwood, N.Y. At each site, two GE LM6000 turbines produce a maximum of 79.9 megawatts of electricity. Both plants commenced operations in July 2002.

The Shoreham units use fuel oil. The Edgewood units (also known as Pilgrim 1 and Pilgrim 2) use natural gas. LIPA provides fuel for the units, and PPL operates them.

The plants are positioned to serve the Long Island metropolitan area where power supplies are among the tightest in the nation because the construction of new plants and transmission lines has not kept pace with the region's growth.

LIPA has a contract with PPL to purchase 100 percent of the power generated by the units for its customers. LIPA owns the retail electric system on Long Island and provides electric service to nearly 1.1 million customers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens.
