Lake Wallenpaupack
Shoreline Management

PPL's Lake Wallenpaupack Hydroelectric Project is authorized to operate by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which is responsible for issuing licenses for the construction, operation and maintenance of all non-federal hydropower projects. FERC has oversight and regulatory authority over all of the activities and lands within the project boundary at Lake Wallenpaupack.

The agency granted its most recent license to PPL's Lake Wallenpaupack Hydroelectric Project in 2005.

As the licensee, PPL is responsible protecting the environmental, recreational, cultural, scenic, and power production resources of the project. PPL strives to balance the needs of these resources along the 52 miles of shoreline it owns around Lake Wallenpaupack. PPL also recognizes that adjacent property owners, local residents and businesses, and other users, and the environmental resources of the area, are all important factors when making decisions affecting the use and access of the project lands and waters.

To meet its federal obligations, PPL requires front-lot property owners to obtain permits for land and water uses that are on PPL's property. Permits are issued for:

  • Buoys
  • Docks
  • Earth moving
  • Floats
  • Land
  • Vegetation removal

To view what is permitted and not permitted on PPL property, please see PPL's Public Lake Use and Shoreline Use Permitting Policy, permit applications, and Frequently Asked Questions that can be found at the top of the page.
