The Safe Harbor hydroelectric plant's 12 generating units are located about 10 miles southwest of Lancaster, Pa., on the Susquehanna River.
The 420-megawatt facility, which started commercial operation in 1931, employs about 85 people. PPL Holtwood LLC, a subsidiary of PPL Generation LLC, owns one-third of the facility and Constellation Energy Group, Inc. owns the remaining two-thirds.
The plants dam is 4,869 feet long and 75 feet high. Behind the dam is 7,360-acre Lake Clark, a popular boating and recreation area. Safe Harbor manages more than 2,300 acres of land in the area for soil, water, and wildlife habitat preservation.
