The Holtwood plant is a 10-unit hydroelectric facility with a powerhouse on the Susquehanna River in Martic Township, about 15 miles south of Lancaster, Pa.

How fish lifts workThe combined capacity of the units is about 109 megawatts. The facility's Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license expires in 2014.

The plant employs about 15 people and is owned by PPL Holtwood LLC, a subsidiary of PPL Generation LLC.

The dam is 2,392 feet long and 55 feet high. The Holtwood fish lifts — among the largest in the nation — are part of a multi-million-dollar project to enable the migrating American shad to continue their annual spring journey up the Susquehanna River to spawn.

The Holtwood Environmental Preserve bald eagle is home to nesting bald eagle pairs, which visitors can spot at an Eagle Watch or through reports from PPL consulting naturalist Jim Smith.

Behind the dam is 2,400-acre Lake Aldred, a popular boating and recreation area. PPL manages more than 5,000 acres of land in the area for soil, water and wildlife habitat preservation.

On Nov. 21, 2002, Holtwood achieved "Star" certification in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Program. The plant was recertified in November 2005.

The program recognizes companies that go beyond compliance to protect worker health and safety. The VPP Star certification is the highest safety recognition given within the program.
