Historic Dams

PPL Maine values the heritage of the communities it serves. Several of our facilities date back a century or more.

The Milford Hydroelectric Station, built in 1906, originally was used to power the trolley car system between Milford and Bangor. The architectural integrity of the powerhouse has been maintained over the years, resulting in its placement on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Veazie Hydro Station, located between the towns of Veazie and Eddington, is one of the oldest continually operating hydroelectric generating facilities in the United States. Veazie's powerhouse dates to 1891.

Our employees take pride in restoring aging equipment to top condition. A prime example is the renovation of the Great Works Hydroelectric Station in Old Town. The generating units, which date back to 1912, were in disrepair when PPL Maine acquired the facility. Our workers took apart the equipment, replaced broken parts and returned the units to service. The improvements added more than one megawatt of generating capacity, enough to light about 1,000 homes.

Tours of the Milford plant are conducted upon request. If your group is interested in visiting the plant, please call 207-827-2247 to make arrangements.
