Water level of Lake Aldred to be lowered for work at Holtwood Dam

PPL’s Holtwood hydroelectric plant will lower water levels of Lake Aldred starting Tuesday (5/26) night and lasting through 6 p.m. on Wednesday (5/27), weather permitting, for additional maintenance work at the dam.

Lake levels will be lower than normal while this work is being conducted. During that time, recreational boating and fishing are not recommended on the lake because of shallow water.

PPL reduced the lake level on May 1 to install flashboards on top of the Holtwood Dam. The maintenance work on May 27 will involve replacing or repairing flashboard that were damaged during recent high river flows. Flashboards are large wooden boards used to raise the elevation of water held back by the dam.

The boards, fixed to steel pins atop the concrete dam, make the Holtwood hydroelectric plant — a source of clean, renewable energy — more productive and efficient, and raise the level of Lake Aldred for boating.

Lake Aldred is an 8-mile-long body of water formed by the Holtwood Dam and hydroelectric plant on the lower Susquehanna River. PPL owns and operates the dam and recreational facilities on both sides of the lake, including boat ramps at Pequea and York Furnace.

PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL), headquartered in Allentown, Pa., owns or controls more than 12,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to about 4 million customers in Pennsylvania and the United Kingdom.
