PPL’s Holtwood hydroelectric plant will lower water levels of Lake Aldred from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday (5/1) and Saturday (5/2) for maintenance work at the dam.
Water will be low while this work is being conducted. During that time, recreational boating and fishing are not recommended on the lake because of shallow water.
The maintenance work on the dam will involve replacing or repairing damaged flashboards, which help regulate the level of the lake. Flashboards are large wooden boards used to raise the elevation of water held back by the dam.
The boards, fixed to steel pins atop the concrete dam, make the Holtwood hydroelectric plant — a source of clean, renewable energy — more productive and efficient, and raise the level of Lake Aldred for boating.
The line of safety marker buoys 1,000 feet upstream of the dam will also be installed this weekend. PPL is completing the work now because the river flows have decreased.
Lake Aldred is an 8-mile-long body of water formed by the Holtwood Dam and hydroelectric plant on the lower Susquehanna River. PPL owns and operates the dam and recreational facilities on both sides of the lake, including boat ramps at Pequea and York Furnace.
