Water level of Lake Aldred to be lowered for work at Holtwood Dam

PPL’s Holtwood hydroelectric plant will lower water levels of Lake Aldred from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, for maintenance work at the dam.

Water levels will be about 4 feet lower than normal while this work is being conducted. During that time, recreational boating and fishing are not recommended on the lake because of shallow and rocky water.

The maintenance work on the dam will replace damaged flashboards, which help regulate the level of the lake. The flashboards were damaged by high river flows earlier in the spring. The line of marker buoys 1,000 feet upstream of the dam will also be installed this weekend.

PPL is completing the work now because the river flows have decreased.

Lake Aldred is an 8-mile-long body of water formed by the Holtwood Dam and hydroelectric plant on the lower Susquehanna River. PPL owns and operates the dam and recreational facilities on both sides of the lake, including boat ramps at Pequea and York Furnace.
