High river flows affecting water levels at Lake Aldred

Lake above Holtwood Dam is below normal recreational level

Because of high river flows, water is spilling over the top of PPL’s Holtwood Dam. However, the water level of Lake Aldred may be below the normal summer recreational level.

“High river flows have damaged flashboards on top of the Holtwood Dam that are necessary to maintain summer lake levels on Lake Aldred,” said Chris Porse, manager of PPL’s Holtwood hydroelectric plant.

In addition, the no boating zone marker buoys that are placed 1,000 feet upstream from the dam have not yet been installed this year because of the recent high river flows.

“We recommend boaters and fishermen stay well above Holtwood Dam and not go beyond the large signs warning of dam 1 mile ahead,” Porse said. “We have to wait until the river flows decrease to replace the flashboards and install the marker buoys safely.”

PPL is monitoring river flows and will schedule the work as soon as river conditions permit. Until the flashboards can be replaced, water level on Lake Aldred may be lower than normal.
