PPL Corporation on Wednesday (9/5) donated $8,250 to the Wayne Pike Chapter of the American Red Cross to help purchase weather radios for people living along the Lackawaxen River.

“We are acting on a suggestion from the Lake Wallenpaupack Public Advisory Committee, which gives our neighbors in the lake region a forum with us,” said Paul Canevari, PPL’s regional community relations director. “The committee identified a need to improve emergency notifications to people who live along the Lackawaxen River, and PPL is pleased to support that initiative.”

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radios broadcast official National Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Wayne Pike Chapter of the American Red Cross will purchase 150 NOAA radios, which will be distributed by local municipalities to people who live along the Lackawaxen.

The donation was recommended by the Emergency Communications Subcommittee of the public advisory committee, which brings together elected officials, community associations, government representatives and local business leaders to address issues that affect the quality of life of residents in the lake region.

The public advisory committee continues to review various issues that affect shoreline management and the future environmental and economic viability of Lake Wallenpaupack. These issues include flood mitigation, shoreline permits and emergency communication.

PPL’s Lake Wallenpaupack dam and power plant have the capacity to generate 44 megawatts of electricity. The 5,700-acre lake plays a critical role in regional water management and is a popular location for year-round outdoor recreation. Camping, hiking, fishing, boating and water-skiing are just some of the attractions.
