PPL Electric Utilities Announces E-Power Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb Giveaway

Customers Completing Home Profile to Receive Bulb

PPL Electric Utilities will give away 120,000 energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs to help customers save energy and money and to raise awareness about energy efficiency.

“These bulbs are a great way for customers to help control electricity use and protect the environment because they use far less electricity than conventional lighting,” said David G. DeCampli, president of PPL Electric Utilities. “Understanding that electricity supply costs will be going up, we have developed this program as part of our e-power initiative to get our customers thinking about the many opportunities they have to reduce energy use.”

Beginning Thursday (11/1), every residential customer who completes a home profile through the company’s Energy Analyzer at www.pplelectric.com will receive two free ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent bulbs. More than 15,000 customers who have already used the Energy Analyzer will also be sent two free light bulbs from PPL Electric Utilities over the next few weeks.

According to government studies, compact fluorescent bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, last up to 10 times longer and produce less heat, which can help save on cooling costs. A customer who replaces two standard 60-watt bulbs with the 13-watt compact fluorescent bulbs provided by PPL Electric Utilities can save as much as $100 combined over the life of the bulbs.

DeCampli said the Energy Analyzer, launched this summer, is a great place to start for customers looking to improve efficiency. Once customers complete a home profile online, the Energy Analyzer not only displays how their homes use energy, but also provides customized energy-saving tips.

Customers can view and print a detailed home energy analysis, complete with savings estimates. They can compare bills to see what effect weather or other factors may have had in changes they see. In addition, they can see how their homes compare with others, and return at any time to update their profile.

“Few people can afford to do everything all at once to make their homes more efficient,” DeCampli said. “For most, it’s about making choices. The beauty of our Energy Analyzer is that it helps you make the right decisions for your home and budget.”

Compact fluorescent light bulbs are one example of an easy, low-cost choice customers can make to save electricity, protect the environment, and help reduce the need for new power lines and power plants, DeCampli said. Customers can get the best results by replacing their most frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones.

PPL Electric Utilities’ light bulb giveaway could save more than 56 million kilowatt-hours of electricity over the life of the bulbs. The change also has environmental benefits. It could prevent more than 43,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the equivalent of planting more than 10,000 acres of trees or removing more than 7,000 cars from the road for one year. This program will also save customers a total of about $5.9 million in energy costs over the life of the bulbs.

PPL Electric Utilities Corporation, a subsidiary of PPL Corporation that provides electricity delivery services to about 1.4 million customers in Pennsylvania, has consistently ranked among the best companies for customer service in the United States.
