PPL’s Environmental Preserves are Launchpads for Geocaching Adventures

A Treasure Hunt for the 21st Century, Geocaching is Fun for the Whole Family

With 17,000 acres of land set aside for public use, PPL Corporation’s environmental preserves are an ideal setting for geocaching — a high-tech game of hide-and-seek the whole family can enjoy.

“PPL has set up geocaches on company land from Maine to Montana. They’re educational, challenging and provide lots of family fun,” said Jon Beam, a senior naturalist at PPL and a geocacher. “Each location is near a PPL power plant and offers a unique adventure where you’ll discover wetlands, wildflower fields or old growth forests.”

A treasure hunt for the 21st century, geocaching is a new trend growing in popularity with the increasing availability of hand-held Global Positioning System devices. Individuals and organizations set up caches throughout the world and share the location coordinates on the Internet. GPS users can then use the coordinates to find the caches — often simple containers with logbooks and trinkets.

So get outside and begin your geocaching adventure at PPL’s environmental preserves.

How to Get Started

Coordinates and clues to PPL’s geocaches are on the Internet at www.pplgeocaching.com.

If you’d like to expand your geocaching adventures, visit www.geocaching.com, where you can sign up for a free account that will let you track your visits, log your finds and share your experiences with other geocachers. You’ll also be able to search for geocaches worldwide by ZIP code, city, state or keyword.

Once you have the coordinates to the site, plug the information into your GPS unit and set off on your adventure.

When you find your cache, follow these simple rules: Take something from the cache, leave something in the cache and write about it in the logbook. Most people leave inexpensive trinkets such as small toys, fishing lures, souvenirs, GPS batteries or buttons. Because every cache is different, you never know what you might find.

Share Your Adventures with Others
Go to www.pplgeocaching.com to submit your stories and photos of your geocaching experience.

The first person to log a visit to each of PPL’s 10 geocaches will win a copy of “A Field Guide to Eastern Forests: North America” (Pennsylvania and Maine) or “Birds of Montana Field Guide” (Montana). Be one of the first 50 people to e-mail PPL about your geocaching adventure and you will receive a compass key chain to help you in your next quest.

PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL), headquartered in Allentown, Pa., controls more than 11,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to more than 5 million customers in Pennsylvania, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
