With more than a dozen events throughout Pennsylvania, Maine and Montana, PPL will offer numerous opportunities for people to learn, act and celebrate in honor of Earth Day. It’s a part of PPL’s long history of generating and delivering electricity in environmentally responsible ways.
“PPL understands how important it is to conserve natural resources and protect the environment as we operate our business,” said William H. Spence, executive vice president and chief operating officer of PPL. “Earth Day gives us a chance to recognize the work being done to support that mission and also offers opportunities for others to make an impact.”
To help ensure that its coal-fired power plants operate as cleanly as possible, PPL is investing $1.5 billion to install pollution-control equipment called “scrubbers” at the Brunner Island and Montour plants in Pennsylvania. These scrubbers will remove nearly all of the plants’ sulfur dioxide emissions.
PPL also plans to invest $100 million in renewable energy projects such as the gas-to-electricity facilities it has developed at landfills in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, which generate electricity using methane gas that would otherwise be vented or burned off.
PPL Electric Utilities is expanding efforts to raise awareness about energy efficiency and will launch a new Web site later this year that will enable customers to track daily usage, analyze changes in their home’s energy use and obtain energy advice.
In addition, PPL Electric Utilities is proposing a consumer rebate program to encourage the use of programmable thermostats and compact fluorescent lights, both of which have the ability to save customers energy and money.
Also this Earth Day and throughout April and May, many PPL employees will take part in activities in the surrounding communities in addition to the work they do every day to ensure their plants run in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
Throughout Pennsylvania, Maine and Montana, PPL will offer activities ranging from programs at our environmental preserves to cleanups of local rivers and streams to a special community event at the Plaza at PPL Center in Allentown, Pa. And everyone is invited to explore the environment around PPL facilities by taking part in a geocaching adventure.
