PPL Electric Utilities Crews Making Progress in Nor’easter’s Wake

Situation:
Over the past 12 hours, PPL Electric Utilities crews have restored service to more than 50,000 customers affected by the powerful nor’easter that brought high winds and heavy rain up and down the East Coast. New outages continue to be reported.

Customers Restored:
50,000 as of 5 p.m.

Customers Without Power:
27,100 as of 5 p.m.

Affected Areas:
The storm affected all parts of the company’s service territory with isolated power outages. However, the hardest hit areas are in Schuylkill, Monroe, Carbon and Luzerne counties.

Cause of Outages:
Wet ground soaked by heavy rains coupled with strong winds have been toppling trees and branches, causing them to fall on power lines.

Estimated Restoration Time:
Most customers are expected to be back in service by midnight Monday (4/16) provided there are not many new outages reported. Customers in the hardest hit areas may be without power until Tuesday (4/17) night.

Restoration Strategy:
PPL Electric Utilities has moved crews from the Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lehigh and Williamsport areas — where damage was not as severe — to help restore power in the hardest hit areas. By midnight Monday, fewer than 15,000 customers are expected to remain without power. Crews, who worked long shifts Monday, will rest overnight and continue restoration efforts early Tuesday morning. Utilities all along the East Coast are facing similar wind damage in the areas they serve, so PPL Electric Utilities is relying on its own crews to restore service.
