Over the next several weeks, PPL Corporation's Susquehanna nuclear power plant will be testing the new emergency sirens that were installed last year as part of PPL's commitment to protect the health and safety of the public. The 73 sirens are located within a 10-mile radius of the plant.
"We are performing multiple tests on the sirens to be sure the entire system is functioning well before we begin to use it officially," said Lou Ramos, community relations manager for the power plant. "The sirens are important to emergency planning in the area. They provide a reliable way to quickly alert our neighbors to tune in to local television or radio stations for information." During the testing period, the old system will continue to be tested and maintained for use.
All of the new sirens will be sounded simultaneously during the final system test scheduled for June. At that time, PPL Susquehanna will perform the same routine tests on the new system that were performed on the old one to be sure the sirens continue to work. Routine testing includes an annual full-scale test where the sirens are sounded; quarterly growl tests where the motor is started and turned off before the siren sounds; and electronic, silent tests every two weeks.
Community members who are concerned about an activated siren can call 570-759-2281 to confirm that a test is in progress.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, will renew Susquehanna's license for the sirens once tests reveal the new system works as designed. PPL will then remove the older sirens and poles and restore affected property.
The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.
