Lake Aldred Water Level to Drop for Holtwood Dam Maintenance

PPL Corporation will lower Lake Aldred water levels starting Friday (5/6) for maintenance work on the company's Holtwood hydroelectric dam. The work is expected to conclude May 13, weather permitting.

The work will include repairing the inflatable rubber dams used to regulate water level and replacing wooden flashboards at the top of the dam. The rubber dams and flashboards extend above the main concrete dam and are used to increase water depth. The repair work began last fall but could not be completed due to heavy rain and high river flow.

Recreational boating and fishing is not recommended during periods when the water level is lowered. The reduced water level affects boating and fishing in both York and Lancaster counties. For more information, call the lower Susquehanna River Hotline toll-free at 1-800-692-6328.

Lake Aldred is an eight-mile-long body of water formed by the Holtwood Dam on the lower Susquehanna River. The dam supplies water for PPL's 109-megawatt Holtwood hydroelectric plant.

PPL owns and maintains more than 5,000 acres of land for public use and wildlife habitat preservation on both sides of the lake in York and Lancaster counties in southeastern Pennsylvania.
