Employees working at PPL's Susquehanna nuclear plant in Berwick, Pa., demonstrated their concern for their community by donating more than $220,000 to local United Ways during the most recent fund-raising campaign.
PPL Susquehanna contributed an additional $134,500 in corporate funds to the United Ways surrounding the plant, including Berwick, Columbia County, Wyoming Valley and Hazleton.
The donations are the result of a yearlong "Power of Caring" campaign during 2004 that raised more than $1.5 million in total throughout PPL's operations in seven states in support of the United Way.
"As community members and leaders themselves, our employees recognize the great need for the programs supported by United Way funds," said Lou Ramos, community relations manager for the Susquehanna plant. "Likewise, the company has always regarded the United Way as an important community resource and therefore contributes to local agencies every year."
Throughout the year, Susquehanna employees also contributed directly to several United Way-supported agencies. They donated 350 pints of blood during regular blood drives, which is more than 20 percent of the blood collected by the Berwick chapter of the American Red Cross. They provided more than 300 hours of volunteer time winterizing the scouts' Camp Lavigne and Camp Louise during a "Day of Caring" event. And they raised more than $1,000 for the Berwick area YMCA at a 5-kilometer run held at PPL's Susquehanna Riverlands.
For the holidays, Susquehanna employees contributed more than $2,000 to purchase meals for 23 local families facing financial difficulties, donated gifts to the Berwick area Salvation Army for more than 150 children and sent care packages to 11 servicemen and women.
The Susquehanna power plant, located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.
