About 40 students from Solanco High School in Quarryville, Pa., cleaned up land along the Susquehanna River at PPL Corporation's Holtwood Environmental Preserve Saturday, April 9.
The students, members of Solanco's National Honor Society, selected the cleanup effort as their second semester service project. Working upstream from the Lock 12 Historic Area, they removed more than 20 tires, a small refrigerator, and other trash and debris left on the river bank by recent floods and high water.
Saturday's spring cleanup follows a similar effort earlier this year by local volunteers.
"We're happy to have the help of Solanco's students and other volunteers who share our concern for preserving the environment and cleaning up the river bank in the Holtwood area," said Mark Arbogast, assistant superintendent of environmental preserves. "Their efforts add to the enjoyment of the many people who visit the preserve each year to take advantage of the recreational opportunities it presents."
The Holtwood Environmental Preserve, in conjunction with PPL's Holtwood hydroelectric plant, provides lakeside recreational opportunities and facilities for camping, boating, hunting, fishing and sightseeing on more than 5,000 acres. The preserve is home to more than 39 miles of trails in Lancaster and York counties and includes scenic views of the Susquehanna River.
