PPL Electric Utilities Making Good Progress Restoring Service

Helped by Sunday's (9/19) clear weather, PPL Electric Utilities crews are making good progress restoring power to customers who lost service as remnants of Hurricane Ivan brought wind and heavy rain to much of Pennsylvania on Saturday. Crews have been working to restore service to affected customers since before daybreak Saturday.

Most customers who have been affected by this storm will have their power back on by Sunday night (9/19), but some outages will carryover into Monday. Several instances of local flooding and road closures have prevented crews from accessing outages, which may further extend restoration times for those cases into Monday night or longer.

In some locations where flooding is expected, PPL Electric Utilities is cutting power at the direction of emergency officials to protect public safety. Where that occurs, PPL Electric Utilities will not be able to restore power until emergency officials give their approval to do so.

Customers Restored: More than 100,000 since daybreak Saturday

Customers Without Power: Less than 10,000 as of 9 p.m. Sunday.

Severely Affected Areas: Harrisburg, Bloomsburg and Lehigh Valley areas

Number of Jobs Pending:
About 660

Cause of Outages: Mostly downed trees into power lines because of wind and heavy rain. In some areas, flooding and road closures remain a problem.

Est. Restoration Time: Most customers who have been affected by this storm will have their power back on by Sunday night (9/19), but some outages will carryover into Monday night, possibly longer.

Additional Information:

Flooding is a significant public safety concern and already has hindered access of PPL Electric crews to job sites in some areas.

PPL Electric is using its own crews, assisted by another utility and electrical contracting companies, to restore service.

Company representatives have been making phone calls to customers without power, and going door-to-door in some of the harder-hit communities in the Harrisburg area on Sunday (9/19) to provide outage information to people.

PPL Electric has arranged for local stores to provide ice, dry ice and drinking water at no charge to customers who are without electric service.

PPL Electric is using its automated meter reading (AMR) system to improve the efficiency of its outage response. The company is able to send electronic signals to the meters to determine if those homes or businesses have electric service, which helps make sure that crews are sent to the right locations.
