Employees at PPL Corporation's Susquehanna nuclear power plant presented the American Cancer Society with more than $11,000 in donations at the Berwick Relay for Life fund-raising campaign last weekend.
The contribution was 15 percent of the $70,000 collected for the event and was the highest amount donated by a single team this year. The campaign goal was $60,000.
Along with the financial contributions, the company supported the event by providing the expertise of several linemen and other equipment to bring power to the track at Berwick Area High School so the event could continue through the night.
"Being able to exceed our goal even in these difficult economic times shows the incredible kindness of the Berwick community," said Amy Shortledge, co-chair of the Berwick Relay for Life campaign. "The large monetary donation from PPL employees and the time and equipment from PPL demonstrate the company's involvement with and concern for the communities near their plants and offices."
The employees walked in shifts from 3 p.m. Friday (6/18) to 3 p.m. Saturday around the high school track.
"Most of us appreciate the amazing gains in cancer treatment and survival rates over the past decade that fund-raisers like this enable," said Herb Woodeshick, special assistant to the president. "The success of this fund-raiser is an example of how PPL Susquehanna employees put their hearts into helping local organizations enhance the quality of all of our lives."
The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.
