PPL Employee’s Son Named a Winner in National Merit Scholarship Competition

Through PPL Corporation’s participation in the National Merit Scholarship program, the son of one of its employees has been named a winner in the 2004 competition.

David Nowakowski, son of Michael P. Nowakowski, supervisor-facilities records for PPL Electric Utilities at the Harrisburg Service Center, received a four-year scholarship award and a certificate in the National Merit Scholarship program.

Nowakowski, who graduated this month from Trinity High School, Camp Hill, Pa., is considering a college major in philosophy at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. His passion for debate will take him to Yale University this summer as an instructor for a debate workshop. He has attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts and was active in his school band.

This year, about 1,050 high school seniors received corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards financed by more than 300 companies.

"We’re proud to support and recognize the academic achievements, extracurricular accomplishments and leadership skills of the children of PPL employees through the National Merit Scholarship program," said Meg Welker, PPL’s education relations director. PPL has been a sponsor of the scholarship program since 1965 and has awarded 102 scholarships to date.

"Supporting educational programs is an important community commitment for PPL," Welker said. "Our efforts include financial support for colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations and community events, as well as a full slate of energy and environmental education programs and electrical safety initiatives."

In addition, more than 1,600 PPL employees contribute more than 188,000 hours annually to various organizations through the company’s Community of Volunteers program.

"These students are our future leaders," Welker said. "We’re honored to help them achieve their academic goals through the National Merit Scholarship program."

PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL), headquartered in Allentown, Pa., controls more than 12,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to nearly 5 million customers in Pennsylvania, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
