Noted Children’s Author Visits PPL’s Montour Preserve

Children’s book author and illustrator Lindsay Barrett George paid a visit to PPL Corporation’s Montour Preserve on Monday (8/2) to lead a workshop for teachers from the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit who work with special needs students.

Barrett George’s best-selling books, which include "In the Woods: Who’s Been Here," are about animals and the places they live — the same subjects addressed in Montour Preserve’s programs for the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit’s special needs students.

"We’ve been working with special needs students for quite a few years," said Jon Beam, PPL’s naturalist at Montour Preserve. "Joan Horton, Early Literacy/Intervention consultant for the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit, has developed many innovative approaches for teachers of special needs students to use for environmental and ecological education on field trips to the preserve.

"Together with Sue Sprout, a retired teacher, Horton has been developing a CD that follows the theme of Barrett George’s book and includes signs and tracks of different animals in habitats at Montour Preserve."

After hearing about the Montour Preserve program from Horton at one of her book signings, the author and illustrator offered to conduct a workshop at the preserve for the intermediate unit’s teachers, Beam said.

Twenty-two teachers from the intermediate unit attended the workshop.
