PPL’s Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Luzerne County near Berwick, Pa., is operating at reduced power after the plant’s fire brigade quickly extinguished a small oil fire late last night (9/10).

The fire was on a pump not directly related to the plant’s nuclear safety systems, which were not affected by the incident.

"Our plant fire brigade reacted quickly. There were no injuries. There was never any threat to the general public as a result of this incident," said Joe Scopelliti, spokesperson for the Susquehanna plant.

At 11:14 p.m. Wednesday, a small fire started on one of three pumps that provide water to the Unit 1 reactor. This water is then boiled to make steam, which drives the turbine to generate electricity. Using a dry chemical extinguisher, the plant’s fire brigade put out the fire in eight minutes.

"We are investigating the cause of the fire," Scopelliti said. "Unit 1 is operating at about 65 percent power while repairs are being made. Unit 2 was unaffected and remains at full power."
