Federal, state and local agencies will participate in a demonstration of the emergency response plan for PPL’s Lake Wallenpaupack hydroelectric project during a drill Friday (9/12).
As part of PPL’s comprehensive safety program, the company has a detailed emergency response plan for dealing with the unlikely event of a dam failure and related flooding. Tests of the plan are required every five years under the terms of PPL’s license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
The drill will not affect normal activities on or around the lake. However, local emergency management agencies may use emergency vehicles during the exercise.
Lake Wallenpaupack, on the border of Wayne and Pike counties in the Pocono Mountains, was built by PPL in 1926 to provide water for the company’s Wallenpaupack hydroelectric power plant. The lake has become a popular, year-round recreation area.
