More than 117 PPL Susquehanna nuclear plant employees contributed a different kind of energy to the community this month when they participated in a nuclear industry-wide blood drive.
The nuclear industry’s trade association, the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), in conjunction with America's Blood Centers and the American Red Cross, sponsored "Energy for Life" blood drives before the July 4th holiday. More than 60 nuclear-related organizations across the nation joined together to prevent severe blood shortages during this period when the blood supply usually is low.
"PPL has always taken pride in being actively engaged with the people and the communities we serve," said Herb Woodeshick, PPL Corp. special assistant to the president for Susquehanna. "This program enables us to make a valuable contribution toward enhancing and even saving the lives of our neighbors who are most in need."
The PPL Susquehanna "Energy for Life" blood drive, held Wednesday (6/20) at the plant, contributed 114 pints of blood to the cause.
"The blood supply is very fragile, especially during the summer months," said Jeanne Dariotis, President, America's Blood Centers. "Energy for Life blood drives held by the nuclear industry play an important role in saving patients’ lives. We appreciate the continued support of local community blood centers who work with their employees to make a difference in communities nationwide."
The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about five miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna, LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna.
