PPL Employees to Clean, Repair Columbia Borough Park

More than 40 volunteers from PPL Corp.'s Lancaster region will make repairs, landscape and do other maintenance at Columbia Borough Community River Park May 12.

PPL volunteers will work from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to restore the park pavilion and rest rooms, replace grills, prune and mulch trees, paint the flagpole and clean the grounds and river bank.

PPL decided to send volunteers to the 4-acre park because many of its Lancaster employees live in or near Columbia and recognize that the park is in need of restoration, said Larry Downing, PPL's Community Development Director for the Lancaster area.

"It's a very heavily used park and we wanted to step in and help spruce up this beautiful riverside area," he said. "Tax dollars only go so far."

The work at Columbia Borough Community River Park is part of the ongoing outreach supported by PPL's Community of Volunteers, an umbrella organization for the company's volunteer efforts.

PPL employees devote an average of 133 hours per year helping improve their neighborhoods, parks and supporting outreach organizations in Community of Volunteers.

Two Columbia businesses have agreed to donate supplies for the May 12 project. Musser Supply Inc. will supply mulch and C. A. Herr Hardware will supply paint.
