PPL Locomotive Makes Tracks to Strasburg to Help Preserve Keystone State's Railroad Heritage

Strasburg---PPL Corporation today (3/17) announced it will donate a working locomotive to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg.

The locomotive was formerly used to move railroad cars and material around PPL's Holtwood power plant. The engine has been in service since the 1950's, and Railroad Museum Director David Dunn said this donation will further extend the engine's life.

"It is a great way for an engine that has lived out its career at one location to live on at another," said Dunn. "We are just very appreciative that PPL would think of us for this donation."

The locomotive will be used to help move the nearly 100 vintage engines and rail cars in the museum's rail yard. PPL representative Larry Downing noted that PPL was pleased to support this partnership between PPL and the state's Historical and Museum commission.

"Pennsylvania's railroad legacy is beautifully chronicled at the Railroad Museum. It is our hope that this donation can assist the museum in its continuing efforts to keep this rail heritage alive," said Downing.

The Museum will pick up the locomotive from PPL's Holtwood plant early Monday morning on a specially designed flatbed trailer with rails. The train should reach the Strasburg rail yard by early afternoon and will then be moved to the Museum yard shortly thereafter.

The Railroad Museum was enacted in the 1960's by the state legislature to preserve Pennsylvania's railroad heritage. The museum is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
