Lake Aldred will be lowered Wednesday (6/7) to allow repairs on two sections of flashboards at PPL Holtwood Dam, the company announced today.
Lake levels need to be lowered to make the necessary repairs on the flashboards, which were damaged by recent high river flows, said Mark Arbogast, land management superintendent at PPL Holtwood.
Flashboards are wooden planks fixed on the top of the dam to hold back river flows so PPL's Holtwood hydroelectric plant runs more efficiently.
Water levels will be down from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday. PPL discourages recreational boating and fishing during this time because of shallow and rocky water. Water levels are expected to return to normal by Thursday morning.
Lake Aldred is an 8-mile body of water formed by the Holtwood Dam on the lower Susquehanna River. PPL owns and manages thousands of acres of public use land on both sides of the lake in York and Lancaster counties in southern Pennsylvania.
