PP&L Names New Vice President-Nuclear Site Operations

PP&L, Inc. announced today (1/19) that Bryce L. Shriver, a 25-year veteran of the nuclear power industry who has served as general manager of the Susquehanna nuclear plant since this summer, will become vice president-Nuclear Site Operations effective Jan. 21.

The company also announced that Robert G. Byram, PP&L senior vice president and chief nuclear officer, will be devoting his full time to the Susquehanna plant and will be concentrating his leadership on implementing the company's strategy to move the plant into top quartile industry performance within two years.

Shriver replaces Robert F. Saunders, who announced this week that he has accepted a position as chief nuclear officer for FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. in Ohio. Saunders had served in the vice president position since June of 1998. "The move to FirstEnergy is a career advancement for Bob Saunders," said Byram. "It fulfills a long-term career goal of his to be a chief nuclear officer.

Bryce Shriver brings extensive -- and wide-ranging -- experience to the vice president-Nuclear Site Operations position at PP&L," said Byram. "And, in the time he has served as general manager at Susquehanna, he has shown a remarkable ability to lead this organization. Bryce already has helped us to map out a strategy that will enable us to accelerate the pace of operational improvements at our Susquehanna plant. We are pleased that Bryce has agreed to serve in this expanded role."

In his new position, Shriver will have overall responsibility for the site operations at Susquehanna. Byram said the company already has begun an expeditious search for a new general manager of Susquehanna, which will include external candidates.

Byram also thanked Saunders for his service at Susquehanna. "Bob made major contributions to our nuclear leadership team, and we wish him well as he takes this next step in his career," said Byram.

Shriver came to PP&L from the Tennessee Valley Authority's Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama, where he served as assistant plant manager. For 16 years, Shriver was employed by Virginia Power Co., where he held a variety of management positions in power plant operations, maintenance, engineering, outage planning, safety oversight, training and regulatory compliance. Shriver also has served as director of the nuclear reactor facility at the University of Virginia and as a nuclear power engineer with the U.S. Navy, assigned to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Division of Naval Reactors.

Shriver has Ph.D. and B.S. degrees in metallurgical engineering and an M.S. degree in nuclear engineering, all from the University of Missouri-Rolla, as well as an M.B.A. degree from Averett College, Danville, Va.

The Susquehanna plant, located about five miles north of Berwick in Luzerne County, is jointly owned by PP&L, Inc. and Allegheny Electric Cooperative, Inc.
