PPL Corp. announced today (4/19) that its PPL EnergyPlus subsidiary has received a license from the Maryland Public Service Commission to supply electricity to customers in Maryland. This milestone continues the growth of PPL EnergyPlus in states that have opened their electricity markets to competition.
PPL EnergyPlus, a subsidiary of PPL Corp., already supplies electricity to thousands of businesses in four states (Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Maine), and sells natural gas to businesses.
"We are pleased that Maryland has joined the growing list of states opening new options for utility consumers," said Larry De Simone, president of PPL EnergyPlus. "Choices in electric generation supply can help Maryland businesses become more competitive by lowering their costs. It's a pattern we've seen repeated in other states that have opened their energy markets to competition."
He said PPL EnergyPlus will target specific opportunities to supply electricity to large industrial and commercial customers in Maryland. PPL EnergyPlus will not be making offers to Maryland residential customers.
"As the market develops in Maryland, we will evaluate opportunities to expand the number of customers we serve," De Simone said. "At this time, however, our ability to serve electricity customers is limited by the prices set as 'shopping credits.' These prices are used by customers to compare offers from suppliers and maximize their savings."
De Simone noted that Maryland customers face important decisions that will affect how they purchase electricity in the new, competitive marketplace, and PPL EnergyPlus has the experience to help customers understand their options and make informed choices.
In addition to the four states where it currently supplies customers, PPL EnergyPlus is a licensed electricity supplier in Montana, and has filed for licenses to serve customers in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

The entry of PPL EnergyPlus into the competitive electricity market expands the presence of PPL Corp. in Maryland. PPL Utilities has a small number of natural gas distribution customers in Maryland and provides wholesale electricity and natural gas supply to Easton Utilities, a municipal utility on the Eastern Shore serving about 8,700 customers.
