Lake Aldred Water Level to be Reduced for Dam Repairs

PP&L, Inc. will reduce water levels on Lake Aldred beginning Monday (9/27) by 4 to 5 feet for concrete repair on Holtwood Dam. The work is part of an ongoing project to replace worn concrete on the top crest of the dam.

The work will continue through Oct. 29. Water levels will be lowered from 7 a.m. through 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. If weather interrupts work during the week, water levels may be lowered on Fridays as well. Any change in weather conditions can affect work schedules, which may alter the projected completion date of the work.

The water level on Lake Aldred will return to normal on weekends.

Water levels will be a foot lower than previous times when the lake was lowered. Boaters and marinas need to check their boat moorings to ensure their boats don't bottom out.

During the week of Oct. 11, normal lake elevations will be maintained for the first week of duck hunting. "We know that the lake level is important to duck hunters, so we will suspend work during that week," said Mark W. Arbogast, Holtwood Land Management superintendent.

Recreational boating and fishing is not recommended during periods when the water level is lowered. Boating and fishing access in both York and Lancaster counties will be affected by the lower water level.

Lake Aldred is an 8-mile body of water formed by the Holtwood Dam on the lower Susquehanna River. PP&L, Inc. owns and operates recreational facilities on both sides of the lake, including boat ramps at Pequea and York Furnace.
