With fewer than 100 customers still affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd, PP&L, Inc.'s storm-restoration efforts are coming to a close. Floyd has earned the reputation as one of the most damaging storms in PP&L's history, affecting more than 270,000 customers in the company's 10,000-square-mile service area.
Here is the latest information about the restoration efforts:
-- As of 5:30 a.m. Monday (9/20), about 100 PP&L customers were without power, down from about 3,000 at 4 p.m. Sunday.
-- PP&L projects that all remaining customers will have their power restored by noon today (9/20).
-- Since the storm began, power has been restored to about 270,000 customers.
-- For the most part, power has been fully restored to customers except in the Harrisburg area and the Poconos (Monroe, Wayne and Pike counties). In these remote areas there has been extensive damage, with multiple spans of wires felled by the heavy wind and rain, downed trees and tree limbs on Thursday and Friday.
-- PP&L has shifted line crews within its service area to those locations where customers remain without power.
-- All remaining storm affected customers are being actively worked on by PP&L crews. Crews from other electric companies from West Virginia and Canada will be released.
-- PP&L is not providing crews to other utilities affected by Hurricane Floyd at this time. When service has been restored to all of PP&L's customers, the company will evaluate any request it may receive for assistance from other neighboring electric companies.
-- Since the storm hit on Thursday (9/16), more than 2,000 people working around the clock, to repair Floyd's damage and conduct outreach services to customers without power.
-- PP&L, in conjunction with county emergency management agencies across eastern and central Pennsylvania, arranged outreach services for customers who have been without power for an extended period of time. PP&L arranged for dry ice, regular ice and water to be provided in certain areas throughout the PP&L territory for customers. In addition, PP&L employees have made thousands of phone calls to customers without power to provide information and to offer assistance.
-- As PP&L moves toward completing the storm cleanup, the company asks customers who are still without power - but have not yet reported the outage - to call PP&L's toll-free service number, 1-800-342-5775 (1-800 DIAL PPL).
