ALLENTOWN, Pa.---Here is the latest information from PP&L, Inc. about the restoration efforts following Hurricane Floyd:
-- PP&L continues to make progress in restoring service to customers following Hurricane Floyd, one of the most damaging storms in company history. As of 8 a.m. Sunday (9/19), about 8,000 PP&L customers were without power, down from about 17,000 at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
-- Since the storm began, power has been restored to about 260,000 customers.
-- For the most part, power has been fully restored to customers except in the Harrisburg area and the Poconos (Monroe, Wayne and Pike counties). In those areas, there has been extensive damage, with multiple spans of wires felled by the heavy wind and rain, downed trees and tree limbs on Thursday and Friday.
-- PP&L projects that customers in the Harrisburg area will have their power restored by Monday morning and by late Monday night or early Tuesday morning in the Poconos.
-- This morning, about 500 linemen and electrical workers are still involved in the effort to restore service to customers. That includes all available PP&L line crews, contractors and crews from other electric companies from as far away as West Virginia and Canada. PP&L is not yet releasing those outside crews.
-- PP&L continues to shift line crews within its service area to those locations where customers remain without power.
-- PP&L is not providing crews to other utilities affected by Hurricane Floyd at this time. When service has been restored to all of PP&L's customers, the company will evaluate any request it may receive for assistance from other neighboring electric companies.
-- PP&L, in conjunction with county emergency management agencies across eastern and central Pennsylvania, has arranged outreach services for customers who have been without power for an extended period of time. PP&L is providing ice and dry ice for these customers at many locations. PP&L has helped to arrange for water to be provided in some areas. In addition, PP&L employees have made thousands of phone calls to customers without power to provide information and to offer assistance.
