Harrisburg Area Vo-Tech, William Penn Campus, sped off as the overall winner in the sixth annual electric go-cart competition sponsored by PP&L, Inc. and GPU Energy. The competition held Saturday (5/1) at the Carlisle Fairgrounds brought together high school teams throughout Pennsylvania to see who could best make a case for zero-emission electric vehicles being a part of our future transportation alternatives.
While Harrisburg Area Vo-Tech was the overall winner, other schools also garnered honors. In the acceleration event, Harrisburg was first, Ephrata High School took second place, and Carlisle Center for Careers and Technology took third. In the endurance event, Harrisburg was again first; Ephrata, second; and Greater Johnstown Career and Technical Center, third. In the oral presentation event, Milton Area High School was first; Ephrata, second; and Northern York High School, third. In the safety, quality, and design event, Harrisburg continued its winning ways with another first; Berks Career and Technology Center West, second; and Ephrata, third.
All winning schools received trophies. A total of 21 schools participated. Each school received a personalized plaque for its participation. The Pennsylvania Department of Education and Carlisle Productions also provided support for the competition.
Each school received a bare go-cart chassis from their utility company, either PP&L, Inc. or GPU. The schools began working on their vehicles in the fall of 1998. They had to prepare the vehicle according to rules and specifications for the competition.
