Unit 2 at PP&L, Inc.'s Susquehanna nuclear power plant near Berwick, Pa., returned to service Wednesday morning (6/16) after the company replaced an electrical transformer on the non-nuclear portion of the plant.
"We investigated the cause of last week's shutdown and confirmed that one of the unit's three main electrical transformers needed to be replaced," said Herbert D. Woodeshick, PP&L, Inc. special assistant to the president for Susquehanna.
Transformers are part of the plant's electrical system. On Unit 2, they increase the voltage of electricity produced by the generator to 500,000 volts for transmission over PP&L, Inc.'s electric delivery system.
"While the reactor was shut down, we replaced the transformer with a spare we had at the plant and performed maintenance work that can be done only when the reactor is not operating," Woodeshick said.
Unit 1 at the plant continues to operate at full power.
