PP&L, Inc., System Ready for Year 2000

PP&L, Inc.'s power plants and electricity delivery systems are ready for the Year 2000, six months in advance of the new millenium.

"We have completed testing all our electricity generation and delivery systems," said Frank Long, PP&L's executive vice president and chief operating officer. "Through this testing, we have determined that the equipment necessary for the delivery of safe and reliable electricity to our customers is ready for the turnover to the year 2000."

Long said the electricity customers in PP&L, Inc.'s 29-county service area can plan to celebrate the new millenium without undue concern about their electricity supplies. "While the winter season can bring storms that disrupt the electricity supply system, we don't believe our customers need to worry about Y2K causing widespread outages on Jan. 1.

"We expect 'business as usual' as the new year arrives," said Long.

He said the company has examined or tested more than 5,000 computer programs, chips and pieces of hardware during the past three years to ensure they will function properly on critical dates, including Jan. 1. PP&L, Inc., employees and contractors have spent more than 100,000 hours assessing and correcting Y2K issues on programs and equipment throughout the company.

The Y2K concerns arose because computer hardware and software and date-sensitive chips might not properly recognize Jan. 1, 2000, the leap year Feb. 29, 2000, and other critical dates.

"This has been a major undertaking and I'm pleased to say that we have achieved our goal to confirm system Y2K readiness by July 1," said Long.

That readiness assessment includes the Susquehanna nuclear plant near Berwick. PP&L, Inc., also has completed testing at its other power plants: Montour, two coal-fired units; Brunner Island, three coal-fired units; Martins Creek, two coal-fired units and two units that can burn either oil or natural gas; and hydroelectric units at Holtwood and Lake Wallenpaupack.
