PP&L Resources Subsidiary Employees, Companies Contribute $24,000 to El Salvador Relief Effort

Employee and company contributions by two PP&L Resources subsidiaries totaled $24,000 to aid in the relief effort for the people of El Salvador. Employees of PP&L, Inc., the electric utility subsidiary of PP&L Resources, and PP&L Global, Inc., the company's international development arm, combined to contribute $12,500. PP&L Global and PP&L, Inc. contributed $6,500 and $5,000, respectively.

With the help of the Lehigh Valley, Pa., and El Salvador Red Cross organizations, the money will be used to supply medications and life-saving supplies to the people of El Salvador. "The Red Cross is purchasing malaria medication, antibiotics and other prescribed medicines. These are items that PP&L, Inc. employees couldn't purchase on their own and donate," Lou Ramos, PP&L, Inc.'s Community Affairs manager, said.

PP&L Global, provides electric distribution services to nearly 200,000 people in El Salvador in conjunction with its Chilean partner, Emel. Most of the areas served by DelSur, the electric distribution company which serves the southwestern region of El Salvador and is 40 percent owned by PP&L Global, escaped significant damage. Other areas in El Salvador, however, suffered major destruction.

"On behalf of Bob Fagan, president of PP&L Global, and myself, I'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their generosity," PP&L Resources Chairman Bill Hecht said. "The way in which our employees reached out to the people of El Salvador shows just how far our employees will go to embrace others less fortunate."

During Phase 1 of the company's outreach effort, employees of PP&L Global donated $2,500 worth of medical supplies, food and clothing. Medical supplies were delivered by PP&L Global employees to the people of San Salvador.

In Pennsylvania, PP&L, Inc.'s Community of Volunteers, the company's employee volunteer organization, set up a network to collect 7,820 pounds of food, medical supplies and clothing in just 12 days. Items were collected companywide and sent to six major work locations throughout Pennsylvania for packaging and shipment. The supplies arrived in El Salvador early in January.

Lilliana Pacheco, a DelSur community representative, expressed her most sincere gratitude for the much needed help from the PP&L, Inc. employees. "PP&L, Inc.'s direct support has allowed the company (DelSur) to focus their efforts on three communities which were hardest hit, namely Port of La Libertad, San Vicente and Zacatecoluca," she said in a phone conversation with Ramos.
