PP&L, Inc. has named a 25-year veteran of the nuclear industry as general manager of the Susquehanna nuclear plant.
Bryce L. Shriver will assume responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Berwick, Pa.-area facility, reporting to Robert F. Saunders, PP&L's vice president-Nuclear Operations. Saunders continues to have overall responsibility for site operations at the Susquehanna plant.
Shriver comes to PP&L from the Tennessee Valley Authority's Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama, where he served as assistant plant manager.
For 16 years, Shriver was employed by Virginia Power Co. There, he held a variety of management positions requiring his leadership in the areas of defining and accomplishing excellence in power plant operations, maintenance, engineering, outage planning, safety oversight, training and regulatory compliance.
"PP&L is pleased to welcome a professional of Bryce's caliber and vast experience to our nuclear team," said Robert G. Byram, the company's senior vice president-Generation and chief nuclear officer. "Adding Bryce to our team will help us to realize our intent to strengthen our management depth and to continually improve our level of performance at the Susquehanna plant."
Byram also cited Shriver's experience in nuclear power in both the military and academic environments.
Prior to entering the commercial nuclear power industry with Virginia Power Co., Shriver was the director of the nuclear reactor facility at the University of Virginia. Prior to that, he was a nuclear power engineer with the U.S. Navy, assigned to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Division of Naval Reactors.
Shriver has Ph.D and B.S. degrees in metallurgical engineering and an M.S. degree in nuclear engineering, all from the University of Missouri-Rolla, as well as an M.B.A. degree from Averett College, Danville, Va.
The Susquehanna plant, located about five miles north of Berwick in Luzerne County, is jointly owned by PP&L, Inc. and Allegheny Electric Cooperative, Inc.
