PP&L, Inc. Announces School Safety Poster Contest

PP&L, Inc. invites students in public and private schools throughout its 29-county electric delivery territory to enter the 1998 Electrical Safety Poster Contest. This year's theme, "The Ins and Outs of Electrical Safety," highlights electrical safety inside and outside the home.

"For years, PP&L, Inc. — with support from the educational community — has been stressing to students that they must practice electrical safety. We want as many students as possible to take part in the contest and think about electrical safety inside and outside their homes," said Larry Sparta, PP&L, Inc.'s coordinator of energy edcuation programs.

The contest is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Posters announcing the contest and listing the official rules were mailed to schools in early September. The deadline for entries is Oct. 31. Judging will be Nov. 19.

Thirty-six winners will be chosen by a panel of teachers and PP&L, Inc., employees. Three winners (grand-prize, first-place and honorable-mention) will be chosen in 12 categories. The categories are: kindergarten and first grade, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th-12th, sixth-eighth computer graphics and ninth-12th computer graphics.

Prizes include five shares of PP&L Resources, Inc., stock for grade-prize winners, two shares for first-place winners and one share for honorable-mention winners. Each student participant will receive a personalized certificate of appreciation from PP&L, Inc.

The 12 grand-prize winners will be featured on PP&L, Inc.'s 1999 Electrical Safety Calendar. The calendar is distributed to schools in more than 135 public school districts as well as parochial and private schools.

The first 500 teachers submitting student posters will receive the PP&L, Inc., Electrical Safety Wheel, a classroom tool that reinforces this year's contest theme. Teachers of grand-prize winners will receive $50 from PP&L, Inc., for instructional materials or supplies.

PP&L, Inc., has sponsored safety poster contests since 1986 as part of its "Energy in Education" program. The contest is an effective way to help reach a company goal of increased safety awareness among customers.
