PP&L, Inc.’s Hazleton Area Employees Pledge  More Than $29,000 to United Way

PP&L, Inc.’s Hazleton area employees pledged a record $29,198 to this year’s United Way campaign.

"PP&L’s Hazleton employees exemplify the true supporters of our communities. Their common goal is to make our communities better places to live and work. And by giving to the United Way, they can achieve that," Martha Herron, PP&L, Inc.’s community development director for the Hazleton area, said.

This year’s PP&L, Inc. United Way campaign began with a kick-off breakfast in October for employees at the company’s Poplar Street and System Facilities Center locations.

United Rehabilitation Services, which provides comprehensive vocational training and sheltered employment for adults with disabilities, catered the breakfast for more than 300 employees. Employee campaign co-chairpersons Judy Phillips and Nicky Petrole organized the event.

In addition, six employees participated in the Sept. 3 "Day of Caring" conducted by United Way organizations throughout northeastern Pennsylvania. A.J. Onuschak, Bob Tokash and Florie McNelis delivered food from the Commission on Economic Opportunity in Hazleton.

PP&L, Inc. employees Joe Daniel, Mary Jane Przewlocki and Joe Tomcheck spent the day at the Wilkes-Barre office of the Commission on Economic Opportunity.

The Day of Caring is an annual event that offers volunteers and donors the opportunity to spend the day performing tasks at United Way agencies. Participants get hands-on experience in efforts that help agencies provide more effective services to people in need. The event also marks the official kickoff for the United Way giving campaign.

"The Day of Caring is an excellent way for our employees to learn how important United Way is to our communities," Herron said.

This year's PP&L, Inc. employee campaign theme was "PP&L Employees and United Way: Together the Power of People Who Care." Overseeing the Hazleton area employee campaign were: Melanie Pensock, Martha Herron, Charles Gustas, Gerard Beozzo, Linda Quigley, Patti Sinex, Pam Yale, Mary Ann Kelly-Merenda, Bob Maholick, Tony Matz, Mark Moyer, A.J. Onuschak, Nicky Petrole and Judy Phillips.

As a special incentive, PP&L, Inc. United Way Good Egg-level contributors, employees who contribute at least .30 percent of each pay, were eligible to win a one-night, two-day stay at Caesars Pocono Resorts. Carol Seitzinger of the Hazleton Service Center was the lucky winner.

As of Nov. 13, the employees and retirees of PP&L, Inc. and other affiliated companies of PP&L Resources pledged more than $814,000 to this year's United Way campaign.
