PP&L, Inc. will begin installing flashboards on the Holtwoodhydroelectric dam Tuesday (5/26), affecting the water level on Lake Aldred . The work is expected to be done Tuesday and Wednesday (5/27) from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
"This work must be done because high river flows over the winter have removed most of the flashboards," said Mark W. Arbogast, PP&L,Inc.'s land management superintendent-Holtwood. "High river flows also kept us from replacing the flashboards any earlier than now."
Flashboards are large wooden boards fixed to steel pins atop the concrete dam. They raise the elevation of the water held back by the dam and make the Holtwood hydroelectric station more productive and efficient.
The water level on Lake Aldred will be lowered while the flashboards are being installed. This will affect boating in both York and Lancaster counties.
"We need to lower the level of the lake about 4 feet so we can replace the damaged flashboards," Arbogast said. "The lake should return to normal recreation levels by Thursday (5/28) morning. Boating is not recommended when the lake level is down."

Lake Aldred is an 8-mile body of water formed by the Holtwood dam on the lower Susquehanna River. PP&L owns and operates recreational facilities on both sides of the lake.
