Stealing Electrical Ground Wires Creates Safety Hazards

PP&L recently discovered the theft of ground wires from some poles in the Williamsport area. Persons who tamper with PP&L poles and the equipment on those poles put themselves at risk for serious injury, even death, because that equipment may be energized.

The copper ground wires from about 13 poles were taken, apparently to resell as scrap, according to Don Stringfellow, PP&L's community development director in Lock Haven. The investigation of this incident is continuing.

"The person or persons who removed the copper wiring could have been seriously injured," Stringfellow said. "These ground wires could become energized once they were disconnected from the ground."

Stringfellow also said that other wires and equipment on the poles are energized. If someone accidentally came in contact with those wires or equipment, that person could be seriously injured.

The ground wires are important components of the safety system for the power lines, he added. Once they are removed, a safety hazard exists where others could be harmed.

"This incident reminds us that only authorized persons should be around PP&L poles and equipment," Stringfellow said. "The system is designed to operate efficiently and safely. When a part of that system is removed without authorization, then the safe operation of the system is put at risk."
