PP&L Sets Electricity Production Record

Pennsylvania Power & Light Co.'s generating units produced more electricity Tuesday, June 25 than ever before in the company's history, setting a new company record for electricity production.

PP&L power plants combined to produce 170,585,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity throughout the day June 25.

The record output allowed PP&L to successfully meet the high electricity usage of the company's 1.2 million traditional retail customers and to sell about 30 percent of its power to wholesale customers.

"Our ability to generate power beyond the needs of our traditional retail customers allows us to be a major player in the wholesale energy market in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States," said Frank Long, PP&L's executive vice president and chief operating officer.

About 65 to 70 percent of the power produced was used by PP&L retail customers in central and eastern Pennsylvania. The remaining energy was sold through PP&L's Energy Marketing Center to wholesale customers in the five-state PJM power pool, New York and midwestern states as far west as Michigan.

In addition to the total electricity output for the day, PP&L set a new company mark for the most electricity produced in a one-hour period. The record was set between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. when 8,179,000 kwh of electricity was produced.

"The records are a credit to the excellent performance of our generating units and the employees who operate them," Long said.

PP&L's traditional retail customers used near-record levels of electricity June 25. Peak use was between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. when customers used 5,845,000 kwh of electricity. The summertime record for electricity use by those PP&Lcustomers is 6,021,000 kwh, which was set Aug. 2, 1995.

PP&L generates electricity from 16 coal-fired units, two nuclear units, three hydroelectric units, diesel-fired combustion turbines and two co-fired oil and natural gas units.
