Local Students Win in PP&L Safety Poster Contest

Andrea Velas and Carolynn Velas, students at Village Fellowship Homeschool in Quakertown, will become shareowners in Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. as a result of their accomplishments in PP&L's 1996/97 Electrical Safety Poster Contest.

The sisters are among more than 7,800 students who submitted posters throughout PP&L's 10,000-square-mile service territory, which includes all or parts of 29 counties. The two girls are taught by their mother, Deborah Velas.

As a "grand prize" winner, Andrea, a ninth-grade student, earned five shares of PP&L stock to be presented June 19 by James Burns, PP&L's community development director in the Lehigh Valley. Carolynn, a second-grade student, won "honorable mention." She will receive one share of PP&L stock.

Schools participating in the contest received copies of PP&L's safety poster calendar, which features some of the winning posters.

Safety poster contests have been a part of PP&L's "Energy in Education" program since 1986. The goal is to help promote an understanding of energy-related issues among young people and to provide a forum to exchange curriculum ideas among schools.

Winners are chosen in 10 grade categories (kindergarten and first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th to 12th) in six geographical areas in PP&L's service territory.
